Day 17

Wednesday, October 1
Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus,
Virgin and doctor of the Church

Smiling at the threshold of October
is St. Thérèse of Lisieux.

Entered the Carmel at the age of 15,
Appointed to assist the Novice mistress at the age of 20,
Died of tuberculosis at the age of 24.
She was canonized in 1925 with exceptional speed,
which shows how the short life of this "Little Flower"
bore witness to Christ worldwide in a short period of time.

She and her four sisters all chose to live as a nun.
Their parents, Louis Martin and Azélie-Marie Guérin,
will be beautified at Lisieux on World Mission Sunday, October 19.

Thérèse was also given the title of Doctor of the Church
by Pope John Paul II
on World Mission Sunday, October 19 in 1997.

When I was baptized,
Fr. M, my spiritual father, handed me
an autobiography of St. Thérèse, Story of a Soul ,
saying,
"This has been one of my most favorite books since my childhood."

But I didn't feel up to reading it for a while
because this pure and clean and beautiflu nun
seemed very different from me.

Several years later,
I was sick in bed,
picked up the book out of a whim,
and finished reading it in one day.

Yes, Jesus' love for her, her love for him,
her zeal for evangelization, and her suffering and trials
are all different from mine in color and shape,
and yet I could relate to her.

Her remains rests in Lisieux,
but she sometimes "goes out."
She was visiting a church in Paris in May, 1995,
when I was there on honeymoon,
most probably for the 70th anniversary of her canonization.
Her reliquary was small and surrounded by dozens of roses.

As she had promised in life,
she has entered not into death but into life,
and is letting from heaven a shower of roses.
Sts. James and John, in the Gospel reading yesterday,
who asked Jesus if he wanted them
to call down fire from heaven to consume the villagers in Samaria
and were rebuked by the Lord,
may be scratching their heads in embarrasment
and happily watching what their lovely sister is doing.

“No one who sets a hand to the plow
and looks to what was left behind is fit for the Kingdom of God.”
(The Gospel according to Luke 9:62, NAB)

St. Thérèse did live a courageous life
fit for the Kingdom of God.
