Day 0

Day 0_f0185902_0565739.jpg

The Triumph of the Cross

The Fifth 100 Consecutive Days' Mass presided by Fr. Paul Hata, C.P.
Will be starting tomorrow.

This is Day 0.
With hundreds of brothers and sisters
I'll start from Jesus the Crucified who emptied himself and became zero
And take new steps toward Jesus the Glorified.

Hung on our living room wall is the crucifix made of olive wood
Which I purchased at Bethlehem
During my pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1993.
It connects
An event of an execution hill in the Middle East in the 1st century
And a living room of a family in the Far East in the 21st century.

I looked up "olive" in some on-line dictionaries
And found out "olive branch" means an offer of reconciliation,
Originated from the story of Noah in the Book of Genesis,
In which a dove returns with an olive branch after the Flood.
(Both the New Interconfessional Bible in Japanese
And the New American Bible translate it as "olive leaf" in Gen. 8:11.)

Though he was in the form of God,
He did not deem equality with God something to be grasped at.
Rather, he emptied himself and took the form of a slave,
Being born in the likeness of men.
He was known to be of human estate,
And it was thus that he humbled himself,
Obediently accepting even death, death on a cross!
Because of this, God highly exalted him
And bestowed on him the name above every other name.
So that at Jesus' name every knee must bend
In the heavens, on the earth, and under the earth,
And every tongue proclaim to the Glory of the Father:
JESUS CHRIST IS THE LORD!
(The Epistle of Paul to the Philippians, 2:6-11, New American Bible)
