Day 7

Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Happy Lord's Day!

This day,
As the Third Eucharistic Prayer says,
All over the world "from east to west"
Catholics will be gathering at their local churches
to listen to the same word of God from the Scriptures
and receive the same body of Christ in the holy Eucharist,
so that "a perfect offering may be made for the glory of your name."

Just like the laborers who started working at different hours
each of us has a different personality, a different background,
and a different style of the faith in Christ
besides being given different gifts and missions.

Let us celebrate, not envy
the generosity of our Father,
the eternal life Jesus compared to one day's wage!

For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD.
(The Book of Isaiah 55:8, NAB)

Day 6

Franciscan University of Steubenville
"The Invited" (「

Memorial of Saint Andrew Kim Taegon, priest and martyr,
and Saint Paul Chong Hasang, martyr,
and their companions, martyrs

But as for the seed that fell on rich soil,
they are the ones who, when they have heard the word,
embrace it with a generous and good heart,
and bear fruit through perseverance.”
(The Gospel according to Luke, 8:15, NAB)

Today the Church commemorates
One-hundred and three believers
persecuted and martyred in our next door neighbor Korea
in the mid-19th century.

Twenty years ago
I had an opportunity to see a movie titled "The Invited"
at Franciscan University of Steubenville
where I was a graduate student.
A group of the international students held International Week,
and among many different events on campus were
international Mass and rosary prayer,
international desserts evening where I offered soft adzuki-bean jelly
made of the ingredients I could get at local stores,
international talent show,
and this Korean film show.
It depicted bloody persecution
and those men and women, young and old,
who kept their faith in Christ.
I didn't know the background of the story well then
but now I'm almost certain the movie was about today's martyrs.

I just discovered through googling
that Korean Cinema Club will show this movie in December.
I really don't want to watch those scenes of cruel persecution again,
but I may discover something new and necessary
to the me now twenty years later.

The movie was introduced by Paul, Korean graduate student.
I wonder how he's doing now.
May the Lord bless him and his family.

Korea met Christianity for the first time,
when Hideyoshi Toyotomi invaded her in 1593,
through a Jesuit priest who was chaplain
of Yukinaga Konishi the Christian warlord.
She had to wait until the late-18th century
to see the birth of a faith community
(See "Christianity in Korea," Wikipedia.)

For the past two hundred years
The blood of thousands of martyrs were shed
and Christians bore much hardship,
to which Japan negatively contributed,
Korea today has almost 14 million Christians
that is one third of the whole population of the country.
There are about 5 millions of Catholics.
They really are bearing many good fruit.

So I pray and pray for my country
who's Christian population is only 1million (Catholic 450 thousands),
under 1% out of her whole population,
singing "You were born to love you,"
a beautiful song composed by a Korean man
and inspired by a Japanses song,
interceding to Blessed Peter Kibe and 187martyrs.
